Speaker introduction for CreativeMornings Raleigh event
Michael Washington | Liminal
Read aloud by Creative Mornings host Alysse Campbell:
Michael is the founder and CEO of Argyle Rebel Films, a film studio in Durham that seeks to disrupt the cultural paradigms and traditional distribution methods that have historically stifled marginalized communities and the incredible stories they’ve yet to tell.
Several liminal moments in Michael’s life have guided his self-discovery as a father and a filmmaker. At age 42, his father had the first of several heart attacks that would deeply impact Michael and his family. At 26, Michael received a late kidney cancer diagnosis, making him rethink his relationship with preventative healthcare. A lifetime of personal experience combined with his video work for UNC Men’s Health culminated in his recent documentary, Save the Dad Bod. The film explores the question, “Why don’t men go to the doctor?” through testimonials from doctors, family, and Olympic gold medalist Phil Ford.
The film will be shown in February 2022 at the inaugural Chapel Hill Black Film Festival.
Michael is working on several other films through Argyle Rebel, including one about the first Black student at UNC, another about the first Black basketball player at that school, and a film about climbing.
Some of the most difficult transitions in life can also be the most clarifying, forcing us to switch out our current lens for a fresh perspective that better serves our loved ones and our future. Throughout Michael’s talk, we encourage you to reflect on any liminal moments in your own life that have sparked positive change.
Please welcome Michael Washington to the stage!
