Marietta Cellars 2018 Gibson Block Syrah: A Tribute to Time and Place

With a score of 96 from Wine Advocate, It is the showstopper of Marietta Cellar’s Single Estate Series, a series devoted to a wine’s “sense of place.”

Bursts with juicy acidity
— Wine Advocate

This critically acclaimed, unbelievably priced Syrah contends with the finest Syrahs in the world for best taste and best value. Bold and complex, it is the product of sunny Coastal California days, cool-weather nights, and the oldest Syrah vines in California.

Dark cherry and lavender dominate the nose, while aromas of tar, cast iron, blackcurrant, and violet lead to a full body with a round mouthfeel. It has notes of licorice and vanilla and has a long peppery finish. Pair it with cured meats and ripe cheeses, or duck breast with sage and cherries.

A history as rich as its terroir

Planted in the 1880s, The Syrah vines of Marietta’s McDowell Valley estate are some of the oldest in the Western world, and their black grapes flourish with greater concentration each year.

The gnarled and twisted vines tower six feet high along the estate’s historic Gibson Vineyard Block, a mixed block of ancient Syrah and Grenache. The block sits next to the original Gibson family Homestead, nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains. The unique, cool night temperatures of this location give the black grapes their distinct acidity and freshness.

Exceptional in taste and price point

Unlike other red wines, a Syrah’s planting environment will often become a defining characteristic of its taste. But very few Syrahs have the ancient history and cool-weather success of Marietta’s 2018 Gibson Block. Even fewer have the price point that this small, family-owned wine seller provides.
